Thanks to an Owensboro Public Schools iGrant, some OHS students are trading out basketballs for bicycles. Owensboro High School physical education teacher Jason Harrison wrote the grant because he wanted to offer something different when it comes to taking gym as a class.
“I wanted to create a new opportunity for students who may not enjoy sport-based PE classes, but still want to have an opportunity to learn a new way to improve their physical fitness,” said Jason Harrison, OHS PE Teacher.
The class started earlier this year with indoor cycling. Now that Kentucky has blossomed into spring, students are getting to try out the new bikes outside. The class is currently learning bike safety.
“I had a minor knee injury three years ago and it forced me to change my workout routine. I chose to try out cycling because it’s a lot easier on your knees. Once I did that, I thought it might be something students would enjoy. The responses I’ve received have been great,” said Harrison.
The class meets every other day.
