Back Alley Musicals will take audience members back to the ’50s and ’60s with their presentation of the non-stop pop musical The Marvelous Wonderettes Feb. 23 – 26 at RiverPark Center
The Marvelous Wonderettes is a pop musical comedy that pays homage to the high school girl song leader squads of the 1950’s and 1960’s. The story begins on prom night in 1958 at Springfield High School, when four young ladies are called upon as a last-minute replacement for the evening’s entertainment. They entertain not only by singing classic songs of that era but also through their interactions with one another and the other prom-goers with songs like “Mr. Sandman”, “Stupid Cupid”, “Lipstick on Your Collar”, “Teacher’s Pet”, “Sugar and Spice”, “Allegheny Moon” and many more ‘50’s hits. The girls reunite in Act II for their 10-year reunion, bringing the audience into the ‘60s with such memorable hits as “It’s My Party”, “Leader of the Pack”, “Maybe”, “Sincerely” and so much more.
Cindy Lou (Kennedy McCollam), Missy (Susan Dant), Betty Jean (Michelle Trenda), and Suzy (Chelsea Payne) will remind the audience of the music of The McGuire Sisters, Doris Day, The Chordettes, Connie Francis, Dusty Springfield, The Shangri-Las and other recording artists who were Prom and Dance Party favorites. Their songs tell stories of their lives, loves, and teenage years in this funny, heartwarming show.
Laura Staffeld is the director/choreographer for the show and Pam Howell is the music director. Music and lyrics are by various artists and the book is by Roger Bean.
