The Foundation for Daviess County Public Schools Board of Directors is pleased to announce Distinguished Alumni 2014. The public is invited to attend a reception hosted by the board of directors honoring Dr. Rob Hamilton and Gregory Dale Smith, Ph.D. from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, August 29, in the DCPS boardroom at 1622 Southeastern Parkway. For planning purposes, attendees are asked to make a reservation on or before August 22 by email ([email protected]) or by calling the Foundation at (270) 231-5583. There is no cost for the reception.
Dr. Rob Hamilton is a 1989 graduate of Daviess County High School. He completed undergraduate studies at the University of Kentucky; he completed professional studies at Indiana University of Optometry in May of 1996. Dr. Hamilton is managing partner of RiverPark Eyecare in Owensboro and has been married to Casey for 15 years. They have two children, Addison (12) and Jack (8) and attend Owensboro Christian church. Dr. Hamilton is active in an eyeglass distribution program on a church sponsored mission to Guatemala and is a private pilot. He is affiliated with the American, Indiana and Kentucky Optometric Associations, having served as a board of trustee member in Kentucky and Indiana.
Dr. Hamilton was nominated by his wife Casey; in her nomination letter, she says, “Each school year since 2004, Dr. Hamilton voluntarily visits schools in the Daviess County Public School system to conduct vision screenings for students. Through his years of experience he has realized that many children notice changes in their vision around the 3rd grade, so when he visits Whitesville Elementary School, Highland Elementary School, Meadow Lands Elementary School, Country Heights Elementary School and East View Elementary School, those are the students he focuses on. He also conducts vision screenings for the entire student body-grades 1-8-at Heritage Christian School.”
Gregory Dale Smith, Ph.D., is a 1991 graduate of Apollo High School and a 1995 graduate of Centre College where he majored in Chemistry/Anthropology/Sociology. He is the Otto N. Frenzel III Senior Conservation Scientist at the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s Conservation Science Laboratory. Dr. Smith holds a Ph.D. in physical/analytical chemistry from Duke University and completed postdoctoral research at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the National Synchrotron Light Source at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York and at University College in London. Smith has been the recipient of a Marshall Scholarship to study in Britain, National Science Foundation Research Fellowships, and a Goldwater Science Scholarship. Dr. Smith served as field chemist and field supervisor on several archeological projects in Galilee, Israel, has authored numerous journal articles in the areas of chemistry and conservation, and conducts art conservation lectures.
Dr. Smith is married to Shannon Marie Johnson Smith. They have three children: Beatrice (10), Maccabee (7) and Ezekial (4). The Smith family currently resides in Indianapolis.
An official award ceremony will take place at 5:30 with Ms. Shelia Ann Miller introducing Dr. Hamilton and presenting him with a memento of the occasion and Mr. Jeremy Camron introducing Dr. Smith and presenting him with a memento. Ms. Miller (DCHS) is Dr. Hamilton’s former teacher; Mr. Camron is a College & Career Counselor at Apollo, personal friend of Dr. Smith and nominated him for Distinguished Alumnus 2014.
