The Owensboro Rampage high school youth hockey team was crowned state champions this weekend at a tournament in Louisville. The Rampage defeated Henry Clay in the first round, then beat Dunbar in the semi-final and clinched the championship with a strong 6-0 victory against Louisville Trinity.
Earlier in the year, the Rampage tied Trinity once and beat them once.
In the title game, Garrett Baker scored two goals, while Davis Cross, Gage Crabtree, Keegan Hughes, and Brett Bocianoski each scored a goal. Cross and Crabtree each had assists.
“This has been a really good year, especially for our seniors,” said Mark Cross, Head Coach for the Owensboro Rampage. “They went undefeated (with two ties), won a couple tournaments, and then finished state champs.”
Those seniors are Davis Cross, Gage Crabtree, Mayes McFarland, Nathanael Wilson, and Eric Schwender.
The team also won tournaments in Knoxville, TN and Columbus, OH this year.
Owensboro Youth Hockey has built quite a tradition the last several years. This is the second state title for the Rampage, who also won the title in 2012. The Puck Hogs (11/12 yr old league) were regional champions and International Finalists in the Silver Stick Tournament in Ontario, Canada in 2013.
“This year starts a good run for us. We are losing five seniors, but we have some young guys coming up, so we should be pretty good next year too,” Coach Cross said.
