For the first time in school history, the Owensboro Catholic boys basketball team is heading to the “Sweet 16” at Rupp Arena in Lexington.
The Aces defeated Meade County 51-40 in the 3rd Region championship game at the Sportscenter Tuesday night. They are now scheduled to play South Oldham in the first round of the state tournament Thursday night, March 17.
The Lady Aces are also heading to the state tournament. They will take on Harlan at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 10 at Northern Kentucky University in the first round of the Sweet 16.
First-year boys basketball head coach, Tim Riley, said OCHS was an exciting place to be today. “Everyone’s excited! The girls team left this morning. There are a lot of happy people here,” he said.
Riley has coached in the Sweet 16 before. He took Warren Central to state eight times, winning the state championship in 2004. When asked how he managed to take this OCHS squad to state his first year, he answered that he inherited some really good players. “We had buy-in with the players from the very beginning. They’ve worked really hard and this team got hot at the right time,” Riley said.
Hopefully, that hot streak continues – for both the girls and the boys teams.
