The Owensboro Symphony Youth and String Orchestras begin their 46th season with a performance entitled Fiesta! The event will take place on Monday evening, November 20, 2017, in the sanctuary of First Christian Church, 700 JR Miller Boulevard.
Doors will open to patrons thirty minutes prior to the 7:00 p.m. performance starting time.
Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased in advance from any Youth Orchestra member, TheOSO.com or at the door on the evening of the concert.
The Youth Orchestra will perform a collection of music that celebrates music influenced by Latin culture around the globe, featuring works by Ernesto Ginastera, Astor Piazzolla, Leonard Bernstein, Joaquin Rodrigo and Arturo Marquez. Each work features soloists from the Youth Orchestra while some works will include choreography. The String Orchestra will perform J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concert No. 5 arranged by Merl J. Issac, Main Theme from Pirates of the Caribbean by Klaus Badelt, arranged by Paul Lavender and Larry Moore and Winter Milky Way by Yukiko Nishimura.
The concert will be followed by a reception hosted by the Symphony Alliance Volunteers.
The Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, through its sponsorship of the Youth and String Orchestras program gives specialized training to more than 100 talented young musicians each year, some of whom go on to join leading American symphony orchestras. Members represent every local and many regional high school and middle school bands and orchestras. In addition, several adults and college students, wishing to continue their careers as instrumentalists also rehearse and perform with the Youth Orchestra.
“Since 1969 the Owensboro Symphony Governing Board of Directors has placed significant emphasis on the organizations commitment to advancing the performance opportunities of children within the region,” said Dan Griffith, CEO of the Owensboro Symphony. ” It’s great to see several of those who grew up performing in our Youth Orchestra now returning to perform in the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra.”
The Youth Orchestra is under the direction of Tom Stites and the String Orchestra is directed by Wade Wiggins. In addition to weekly rehearsals, students are professionally coached by Owensboro Symphony musicians. The Youth Orchestras present two formal concerts each year, one in the Fall and one in the Spring. In addition, the orchestras host a fundraising dinner where small ensembles from the youth orchestras are featured.
