The heart behind our mission

One of the greatest privileges of serving as executive director of the Senior Community Center of Owensboro-Daviess County is witnessing the incredible generosity of people every single day. While our members often thank our staff for the programs and services we provide, I know the truth: much of what makes our Center special happens because of the selfless dedication of our volunteers. They are our unsung heroes.
Every day, volunteers walk through our doors ready to serve. They greet members with a smile, help in our PinCushion Gift Shop, prepare for activities and special events, assist with programs, welcome first-time visitors, and quietly step in wherever they’re needed. They don’t ask for recognition. They simply see a need and fill it.
What inspires me most is that many of these volunteers are seniors themselves. After spending decades raising families, building careers, serving in churches, and giving back to the community, they continue to invest their time and talents in others. Their lives remind us that retirement isn’t the end of making a difference, it can be the beginning of one of life’s most meaningful chapters.
I’ve learned that volunteering is about so much more than checking items off a to-do list. Sometimes the most important thing a volunteer does is sit beside someone who needs a friend. It’s remembering a name, sharing a laugh, or noticing when someone hasn’t been around for a few days. Those simple moments create a sense of belonging that no program or activity alone could ever provide.
I often say that our volunteers don’t just support our mission, they are our mission in action. They demonstrate what community looks like at its best: neighbors helping neighbors, friends encouraging friends, and people using their gifts to make someone else’s day a little brighter.
The impact reaches far beyond our walls. Volunteers help us stretch every dollar, expand our programming, and create opportunities that would not be possible otherwise. They allow us to serve more seniors throughout Owensboro and Daviess County while creating a welcoming place where everyone feels valued.
This is an especially exciting time for our organization. In October, we will open the doors to our beautiful new Senior Community Center at 3001 West 2nd Street. The new facility represents much more than a new building. It represents new opportunities, expanded programs, additional gathering spaces, and the ability to serve even more older adults in our community.
As excited as I am about our new home, I also know that a building alone doesn’t create community. People do. The warmth that visitors will experience when they walk into our new center won’t come from fresh paint, beautiful furnishings, or modern amenities. It will come from the smiling volunteer who welcomes them at the door, the person serving coffee before a class begins, the volunteer helping someone find the right activity, or the familiar face offering encouragement to someone attending for the first time. Those moments are what transform a building into a family.
As we prepare for this new chapter, we will need more volunteers than ever before. Whether you enjoy greeting guests, helping with events, assisting in the gift shop, supporting fitness classes, sharing a special talent, or simply offering a friendly smile, there is a place for you at our center. One of my greatest hopes is that every person who walks through our doors will leave feeling more connected than when they arrived. Our volunteers make that happen every day.
So today, I simply want to say thank you. Thank you to those who faithfully give your time, your compassion, your energy, and your heart. You may never fully realize how many lives you’ve touched or how many friendships you’ve helped create. You may not receive awards or headlines, but your service changes lives in ways that matter every single day. You are the reason so many people feel at home at the Senior Community Center.
