The Owensboro Symphony has planned a spectacular 2017-18 concert schedule that will celebrate Troy Quinn’s inaugural season as Music Director. The historic season will be filled with both classical and contemporary favorites that are sure to please the entire community.
“I have programmed an extraordinarily wide variety of concerts that I believe will appeal to everyone, featuring an undeniable blend of old and new works,” said Troy Quinn, who assumed the role of Music Director on June 1, 2017. “Naturally we’re always thrilled to welcome to Owensboro world-class artists like violinist Rachel Barton Pine, but I’m especially excited to showcase my incredible colleagues that make up the Owensboro Symphony as we share the stage together this season. I couldn’t be happier to begin this next chapter in the Owensboro Symphony’s history.”

Opening Night! Shostakovich’s Festive Overture opens Troy Quinn’s Inaugural Season as Music Director as the program continues with a bold and colorful return performance by internationally acclaimed violinist Rachel Barton Pine and concludes with Brahms’ rapturous Fourth Symphony.

The Owensboro Symphony Chorus, Kentucky Wesleyan Chorale, the Owensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra, and children’s choruses from area schools will join the Symphony for this Christmas tradition. In addition, Symphony subscribers will be invited to share their favorite holiday photos, including those silly “ugly sweater” photos, that will become a part of this seasonal event!
Shakespeare In Love! Great drama makes for great stories – and that demands great music! The audience will hear how legendary composers have reinterpreted Shakespeare’s timeless literary works. From the tragic story of two star-crossed lovers, come hear Tchaikovsky’s hauntingly beautiful Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture. The Symphony will also celebrate the sound of Shakespeare on film, with familiar works by Bernstein, Rota, and the good old-fashioned romance of Warbeck’s Shakespeare in Love!
Lights! Camera! Action! The Music of John Williams will pay special tribute to this incomparable film composer. With his instantly recognizable scores, John Williams has redefined the art of film music, providing the soundtrack of our lives. Relive music of the big screen from his greatest Hollywood scores, including Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, E.T. and of course, Star Wars. This is a concert you won’t want to miss.
Cosmic Convergence will engage the audience through a full-sensory concert experience accompanied by high-definition video and celestial images taken by NASA. Striking pictures of Earth, Mars, Saturn and more will be projected on a giant screen behind the orchestra. Watch in awe as the exploration of our solar system is brought to life in vivid form while the orchestra accompanies with music from Star Trek, Holst’s The Planets, and Dvorák’s New World Symphony. Mozart’s monumental masterpiece the Jupiter Symphony will conclude this epic season finale.
“Owensboro is in for a real sensorial experience at the Symphony – all season long. Troy has programmed a season complete with some of the most celebrated symphonic masterpieces as well as well-known popular music,” said Dan Griffith, CEO of the Owensboro Symphony. “In addition we will introduce to the audience a new high definition projection system that will greatly enhance the visual experience of listening to the Symphony’s performance. Symphony’s across the country are finding that this type of projected imagery within the concert hall is proving to create a more visible contact between the performers and the audience.”
