Thursday, January 7, 2016 at 1211 hours, units from the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a burglary in progress call in the 100 block of Boothfield Road in Western Daviess County. A subsequent caller advised telecommunicators he had encountered the intruder who brandished a firearm as he fled the area on foot.
Arriving units were able to confirm the perpetrator had fled into a nearby wooded area and was in fact armed. Deputies secured the home and requested assistance from Owensboro Police Department and Kentucky State Police.
Area schools were notified to initiate lock down procedures.
An immediate coordinated search of the surrounding area was conducted by units from Owensboro Police Department, Kentucky State Police and Daviess County Sheriff’s Office. Approximately 15 minutes later, units observed the individual and began to follow the subject until additional units could assist.
The individual was given numerous verbal commands to surrender. As he knelt to seemingly comply, an officer took a position to utilize less than lethal force (Taser). When the individual raised a previously concealed firearm in the direction of the officers, an additional officer then fired a patrol rifle striking the perpetrator. The suspect was pronounced deceased on scene.
This is an on-going investigation and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
An autopsy will be performed tomorrow.
