Swedish Match held a ceremony Tuesday morning (10/18/16) to celebrate the grand opening of its new Research and Development Center.
The $3.5 million, 10,000 square foot expansion features newly designed labs, a sensory test space, controlled environment chamber storage, a microbiological testing area, and open office and meeting spaces.
The expansion, which broke ground last October, will increase product research and testing capabilities and drive local recruitment. The primary focus of the new facility will be microbiology with a concentration on fermentation. The extension will increase the company’s ability to create new products in Daviess County while ensuring pre-marketing approval by the FDA.
Swedish Match is located at 1121 Industrial Drive. The Swedish company, established in 1904, produces tobacco products including moist snuff, cigars, and chewing tobacco. The company operates in six countries, sells products in more than 100 countries, and employs over 4,400 people. The Owensboro facilities employ a workforce of 340.
