As often as Heath & Molly play in Owensboro, you might assume they lived here. Actually they live in Rumsey, just across the Green River from Calhoun. Hey, that’s close enough right? Don’t call them a “local” act though; Heath & Molly have taken their “roots rock” all around Kentucky, across the U.S., and overseas on two European tours.
How many bands have you heard of that recorded a live album in a cave? They did it. Their new live CD, Beneath the Roots, was recorded from two performances deep inside Cascade Cave at Carter Caves State Resort Park in Kentucky. Even more impressive: they did it without any effects or reverb during mixing and mastering. “Our intent was to capture the natural ambience of the cave, the energy of the audience, and the passion of the performances,” said Heath Eric. “What you hear is the natural reverb and sounds of the cave. It’s 100% organic and authentic.” In fact, the very last track, “James Branch in the Lake Room,” is 60 seconds of nothing but the sounds of James Branch flowing through the Cave in the Lake Room, which is the stream that carved Cascade Cave over time. Heath & Molly decided it would be a peaceful reminder of the power and beauty of nature and the perfect way to end Beneath the Roots.
To get to this point in their career, Heath & Molly have released 3 previous albums and toured extensively for several years. Now they are full time, performing artists who book 150+ shows a year.
For just being a two-piece band, their shows are pretty high-energy. Their sound relies on powerful vocals, smooth harmonies, thick acoustic guitar grooves, Molly’s organic djembe rhythms, and a kick drum Cajon that Heath works with his foot while strumming his guitar. It gets crowds dancing and nodding their heads, that’s for sure. Their shows are 100% live: no loops, no sequencers, no tracks, and most definitely no auto-tuning!
Each summer, the duo makes a run touring Kentucky State Parks. They’ve also played the main stage at ROMP, the Kentucky Derby, and several festivals in the Czech Republic, just to mention a few of their highlights.
The Official Beneath the Roots CD Release Party is scheduled for Friday, November 28 at White Buck Vineyards and Winery in Morganfield, KY. Until then, they will be running a pre-release sale on the website for $10. Check www.HeathAndMolly.com for updates.
