Kentucky Mavericks Hold Free Agent Camp and Dance Team Tryouts
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Kentucky Mavericks signed Philpot native, Matthew Karn, at their rookie/free agent camp held November 21 – 22.

Matthew Karn played his college ball at the University of Nebraska, where he played in 18 games over three years for the Cornhuskers. He stands 6’3″ and plays at the guard position.

About 40 men showed up for the tryouts. A statement released by the team this week said, “We felt like the turnout of 40 guys was fantastic. The competition was stiff and the selection was very difficult. We cannot wait until next year’s tryouts to see what other prospects might show up to tryout. We encourage all those who didn’t make the team to come back out to try to improve the 4-Time National Champion, Kentucky Mavericks.”

The other players signed to fill out the roster were:

  • Jerrell Houston – A 6’ 7” Forward/center from Memphis, Tennessee.  He signed at Mississippi State right out of high school but played for three years at Tennessee State, notching 65 games throughout his career.  He also started in 12 games in Germany and 18 games in Spain, where he averaged 12.5 points per game.  His last two teams were the Clarksville Cavaliers in 2012 and the Jacksonville Giants in 2014.
  • Dwayne Lathan – A 6’3” Guard from West Monroe, Louisiana, who most recently played for the D-League team, Rio Grande Valley Vipers during the 2013-2014 season.  He played one year at Louisiana Tech where he averaged 8 points per game over his 30 games there.  He transferred for his final three years of NCAA eligibility to the Indiana State Seminoles where he averaged over 10 points per game, 5 rebounds per game, and 1.5 assists per game over his 82 game career.
  • Cordarius Johnson – From Coushatta, Louisiana, played all four years of his college ball at Louisiana Tech. Johnson played in 133 games for the Bulldogs where he averaged 7.15 points per game over his entire career while shooting over 40% from the field.
