Owensboro Middle School South youth service center director Tonya Barr was honored with the 2017 Kentucky Summer Food Service Program’s (SFSP) champion award on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017.
“I’m honored to receive this recognition. I have a passion to ensure that no child goes hungry in the summer,” said Tonya Barr, OMS South youth service center director.
According to SFSP, the award goes to someone in your community that has helped ensure children get meals they need when school is not in session.
“Tonya always puts students and community children first. Before summer starts, Tonya identifies areas of need for the feeding program, mails flyers, distributes handouts to students and even goes to the surrounding neighborhoods of the mobile stops and distributes flyers,” said Deanna Sanders, OPS food service program assistant.
Barr runs a mobile feeding site in the summer and is never afraid to honk the van horn to let children know that meals at no cost are available just outside their door in the mobile feeding van. Barr also provides reading materials for students as an outreach program.
“My favorite part of the program is getting to talk to children and ask them how their summer is going,” said Barr.
The OPS SFSP program provided over 65,000 meals at 38 active serving sites.
