Owensboro Autism Network hosts “A Walk in Our Shoes” Awareness Walk on Saturday, June 6 from 8:00am – 11:00am at Apollo High School (2280 Tamarack Rd). The walk will be held at the track around the football field.

Registration for the event is free, but shirts will be available for $8. “We’re trying to make this a fun, family-friendly event,” said Sandra Hammers, Co-executive Director of Owensboro Autism Network. There will be a lot going on, including an inflatable obstacle course, face painting (for a small donation to cover cost), a bubble station provided by Simply Therapy, a sensory activities station provided by Bluegrass Rehab, and balloon animals by the Owensboro Twisters. Wilkins Insurance will be giving insurance quotes and donating $5 to OAN for every quote given throughout the event. Tickets for the “murder mystery” fundraiser and the June sensory-friendly movie at Malco will also be sold.

Organizers want families to know that the track is fenced in, so this will be a safe event, and all activities will be held on the football field. The walk starts at 9:00am with a balloon release. Individuals with Autism and their caregivers will walk the first lap together.

Each participant is asked to get as many donors to support their walk as possible. Individuals, families, or teams are welcome to participate. As an incentive, a gift basket full of prizes will be awarded to the team that donates the most money, and the individual with the most donations will be given an iPad mini.

Hammers says participants are also encouraged to donate gently used shoes or clothing items to be donated to local shelters as part of the event.

Owensboro Autism Network exists to assist families and professionals affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder. Their purpose is to support and educate families in our community and surrounding areas through support meetings, networking, and family & community events.
