The Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC) announced $309,946 in grant funding awards for landscaping, walking trails and pour-in-place surfacing projects that utilize recycled waste tires.
The grants are from the Waste Tire Trust Fund, established by the 1998 Kentucky General Assembly to receive a $1 fee from each retail sale of a new tire in the state. The fund helps manage the approximately 5 million scrap tires generated in Kentucky each year and promotes the development of markets for recycled tire products.
Owensboro Public Schools were fortunate enough to receive grant money for two separate projects, both for pour-in-place playground surfaces:
Seven Hills Headstart Preschool – $38,016
Sutton Elementary – $28,890
The EEC awarded 13 grants with two of those being awarded to OPS, the only are to receive more than one grant.
