The Owensboro Police Department has taken an important step in providing emergency care to victims of opioid overdoses.
Our patrol officers are now equipped with Naloxone (Narcan) kits. These nasal spray kits are designed to provide relief from the effects of an overdose in the body. Although Narcan does not remove the danger completely, it does provide the life-saving time needed to get the victim to medical personnel.
The Kentucky Agency for Substance Abuse Policy (KY ASAP) has provided 55 kits and our local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 696 has provided 24 kits. OPD has implemented policy for the use and handling of this product and all sworn personnel have received the appropriate training on its use.
Again, thanks to the generosity of the KY ASAP and VFW Post 696, OPD now has one more tool at our disposal to better serve the community.
