The Owensboro Middle School academic team won its second straight Region 3 Governor’s Cup last weekend. OMS scored 53.5 points for first place. The second place team had 16 points making OMS’ win the largest in Region 3 history.
“I’m so proud of this amazing group of hard working kids. They put in so much extra effort the whole year. This victory is a validation of that,” said Josh Sullivan, academic team coach.
“It felt really good to win Regionals! When they said, ‘The winner is: Owensboro Middle School!” my heart jumped and I was very excited,’ said Clayton Rhoads, quick recall captain.
Last year, the OMS academic team won region for the first time since 2005. Fourteen teams compete in Region 3.
“We had to function as a team and work together. We all had our own study areas and worked hard to do our part for the team. We even had practices at Coach Sullivan’s house on the snow days,” added Rhoads.
OMS also set a regional record with advancing to state in 13 spots (three math, two social studies, two language arts, two composition, three arts & humanities, and quick recall).
Below are the fields the team won and placed in at the Region 3 Governor’s Cup:
- Mathematics: 1st, 2nd, & 3rd
- Social Studies: 1st & 4th
- Language Arts: 2 tied for 2nd
- Arts & Humanities: 1st, 2nd, & 3rd
