After an extensive search, Owensboro Public Schools has named current Owensboro Middle School Principal, George Powell, its new director of student services.
“I applied for the position of director of student services because I felt that it was a position that fit my skill set and it will allow me to impact students on a district wide level. When I found out I was selected for the position, I was honored that the committee and Dr. Brake felt that I was the right person for the job,” said George Powell, new OPS director of student services.
Powell will be responsible for student discipline and school safety at the district level.
“Mr. Powell brings a unique skill set to the position as he’s served in administration at both the middle and high school level. We are confident that Mr. Powell will thrive in this significant position,” said Dr. Nick Brake, OPS Superintendent.
Powell has served as principal of OMS the past six years. Before that, Powell was the lead associate principal at Madison Central High School in Richmond, Ky for six years. Prior to working in administration, Powell taught English and Social Studies at Madison Central High School and Language Arts and Social Studies at Meece Middle School in Somerset, Ky. Powell has a Rank I in Superintendent, DPP and Supervisor of Instruction from Eastern Kentucky University. Powell holds both a Masters and Bachelors degree from Eastern Kentucky University.
Dr. Brake will work with the Owensboro Middle School Site Based Council to begin the search to replace Powell at OMS. Powell will start training for his new position in March.
