Anita Burnette, the beloved principal of Owensboro High School for the past 12 years, announced her intent to retire at the end of the school year in May. Her announcement came at a faculty and staff meeting at the school on Tuesday afternoon.

“I am looking forward to spending more time with my family. With that being said, OHS has been a huge part of my life for a very long time and I will genuinely miss the students and staff. I have been very blessed to spend the majority of my career in Owensboro Public Schools. I have had great students, an excellent staff and a very supportive central office and board of education. It is time,” said Anita Burnette, OHS Principal.

Burnette started with Owensboro Public Schools in 1988 as a special education teacher. She later became an assistant principal, then in 2002, Burnette became the principal at Owensboro High School. During her tenure, Owensboro High School reached new heights building a fine arts program that is the envy of the state and continued excellence in academics and athletics.

“I congratulate Anita Burnette on her retirement. She has been a transformational leader in her contribution to the tradition of excellence at OHS. Her tireless work ethic as well as the care she shows every student and family that walk through the door have always been an inspiration to me. She will be missed,” said Dr. Nick Brake, OPS Superintendent.

Students describe Burnette as a mother figure; someone who always puts her students first. District leaders call Burnette a model citizen and an incredible leader.

“If there is an Owensboro High School activity going on, Anita Burnette is there. She comes to work early and stays late. She goes above and beyond what her job description calls for,” said Dr. Nick Brake, OPS Superintendent.

The search for a new principal for Owensboro High School will start early in 2015. The school-based decision making council will select the new principal. According to Kentucky law Brake, as superintendent, will serve as chair of the council through the selection process.
