John DeLacey, Associate Principal at Owensboro Middle School South Campus, has been selected as principal of Owensboro High School. The Owensboro High School-Based Decision Making Council voted unanimously to hire DeLacey as principal at their meeting today at the Owensboro High School Media Center. DeLacey replaces beloved OHS Principal Anita Burnette. Burnette is retiring at the end of the school year after serving as OHS principal for 12 years.
“Mr. DeLacey has a very unique perspective in that he’s worked with students of all ages in our school system and he has worked in the private sector before becoming an educator. He’s exceptionally prepared to move Owensboro High School forward. As an administrator, teacher, and a coach, he’s already become familiar with many of the students and families at OHS now and for years to come,” said Dr. Nick Brake, OPS Superintendent.
“I’m very excited and humbled for this exciting opportunity to be the next principal of Owensboro High School. I look forward to being a part of the great tradition that Owensboro High School carries with it,” said John DeLacey, OHS Principal-Elect.
DeLacey began working for Owensboro Public Schools in 2003 as a teacher at Cravens Elementary School after working for seven years in private business. He became Assistant Principal at Owensboro Middle School in 2011. In 2013, he became the lead administrator at OMS South Campus as Associate Principal. DeLacey holds both a Bachelors and Masters degree from Western Kentucky University. He has his Rank I in Principal/Instructional Leadership from Western Kentucky University. DeLacey is also an Owensboro High School Alumnus.
“John has been an outstanding instructional leader creating a very positive school culture at OMS South. As an Owensboro High School Alumnus, he has an understanding of how to take that leadership and directly apply it to OHS,” said Brake.
DeLacey will continue to serve as OMS Associate Principal this school year while also working with Burnette to transition to his new role as Owensboro High School Principal. A search committee is being formed to find a new associate principal for Owensboro Middle School.
