A celebration of art by Owensboro and regional artists will open at the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, Saturday, March 8, with a preview and reception for artists from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The exhibition is designed to showcase the accomplishments of local and regional artists featured in the Owensboro Art Guild’s 53rd Annual Juried Exhibition.
The Guild’s adjudicated show continues a tradition established in the early 1960’s when the organization for local artists was formed to advance the quality of local art and to function as an advocacy group for the visual arts in the
community.
According to OAG President John A. Medley, Jr., “The Guild’s 2015 competition for regional artists working in two- and three-dimensional media, will award merit and purchase awards of more than $4,000.” Juror for the exhibition was
artist/educator Michael Aakhus, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, University of Southern Indiana, who selected the exhibition from 104 entries and designated merit awards. The award-winning entries will be announced at the March 7 preview.
Aakhus received his BA in Art and Art History from Bemidji State University, Mich., and a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking, painting and drawing from Southern Illinois University. He was the recipient in 1976-77 of a grant to
continue his creative work with the Roswell Artist in Residence Program where he spent a year painting and making prints in New Mexico.
The exhibition will continue through May 17 and will be open during regular museum hours: Tuesday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Friday 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Admission to the museum is FREE although voluntary donations are suggested of $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children. Access for physically challenged individuals is provided at the Atrium entrance in the 9th Street parking lot.
