I saw some news this week that I was really glad to see.
Diamond Lake Resort was named #4 on OnlyInYourState’s list of “10 Camping Spots in Kentucky Where You Will Never Forget Your Stay.”
Of course, this isn’t news to me. I love Diamond Lake, and have for a long time. I’ve been to Grillin N Chillin (BBQ competition) several years. We had a youth group cookout there back in the day, last summer my wife and I took our kids out to ride bumber boats and feed the fish, and just last month our church rented the go kart tracks for our group on the last day of our high school mission trip. (Their bumper boats, by the way, are especially fun because they have water sprayers on them so you can squirt each other across the lake!)
So this ranking was no surprise to me. But I’m just “the guy from Owensboro Living.” Of course he’s going to say that, you might think. That’s why getting this recognition from a national website is a much bigger deal.
“We are excited and honored to be included in Kentucky’s Top Ten Campgrounds,” said co-owner Janice Smith. “This is our 10th season and we attribute our staff and customers in helping us to attain this distinction.”
Smith and the other owners have gradually made improvements to the facility over the past ten years and they are constantly making upgrades. She could tell you lots of stories: about how an insurance debacle after the ice storm was really a blessing in disguise; about partnering with people from the community, like the Lanham Brothers, who host their Jamborees in the Good Time Theater; about how a family donated the 9-hole disc golf course; and how each of their scheduled activities, like “Hillbilly Olympics,” classic car shows, “Freedom Fest” fireworks, or “Boo Fest” in October, came about.
Being named one of Kentucky’s best campgrounds is certainly an honor, but Janice proudly adds that Diamond Lake offers much more than camping. The OnlyInYourState synopsis mentioned “campsites, electric hookups, cottages, and motel rooms… pedal boat rentals, swimming, fishing, walking, relaxing, playing mini golf,” and the ice cream parlor. The listing says “20 campsites,” but Smith says the number is actually 270. “Plus, we also have three go kart tracks, bumper boats, our live music theater, and we serve great pizza and burgers.”
To see for yourself, Smith invites you and your family to “come spend the day with us!”
