The Daviess County Public Schools district has announced record ACT scores for the graduating class of 2014. The district’s composite score was 20.1, an increase over the state average of 19.9 and an improvement of 0.4 over the 2013 composite score of 19.7. A total of 738 students were tested for 2014, an increase of 23 students over last year’s 715.
Jana Beth Francis, DCPS director of assessment, research and curriculum development, said, “Making progress on the graduating class ACT composite is yet another indicator that our district is making the right choices instructionally so students are ready for life after high school, whether students choose a career path or a college path.”
Daviess County High School reported record high scores in all areas tested and composite results. DCHS tested 377 students. The DCHS scores for 2014 exceeded all state averages and exceeded national averages in three of four areas tested, and the overall national composite average:
English – 21.6
Mathematics – 20.0
Reading – 21.5
Science – 21.0
Composite – 21.2
Apollo High School tested a five-year record number of students – 312 – with a composite score only .04 lower than the state average. AHS scores for 2014 are as follows:
English – 19.3
Mathematics – 18.9
Reading – 19.8
Science – 19.5
Composite – 19.5
DCPS Superintendent Owens Saylor said, “These scores validate the intensive and intentional work taking place across the district as elementary, middle and high schools collaborate to prepare students with the skills and tools needed for a transition to success in college and for obtaining and keeping a family-sustainable career. These scores are a tribute to our dedicated teachers and students, and all those who support the work taking place in our classrooms.”
