Through the generosity of Domtar and their suppliers, the Carson Scholars Fund is pleased to announce the opening of the Ben Carson Reading Room at Foust Elementary School. The grand opening ceremony will take place on Thursday, September 8 at 9:30 a.m. at Foust Elementary School, 601 Foust Avenue, Owensboro, KY 42301.
The Ben Carson Reading Project is an initiative of the Carson Scholars Fund. The Carson Scholars Fund was founded by retired, world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon and New York Times bestselling authors Dr. Ben Carson and his wife, Candy. The purpose of the Ben Carson Reading Project is to create a literacy enriched environment for children to develop their reading skills. The reading project is dedicated to promoting reading as a key to unlocking a child’s full potential.
“The Carson Reading Room is such an exciting and unique addition to our school,” remarked Principal Janie Moseley. “The Carson Reading Room at Foust Elementary School will provide a comfortable, attractive, and relaxing environment for students. This room will help them develop a love of reading and a desire for knowledge. This room, and the thousands of books within it, will help us send students the powerful message that a dedication to reading and a commitment to acquiring knowledge are the keys to future life success. We will continue to share the story of Dr. Ben Carson as an inspiration for students. The Domtar organization and the volunteers provided amazing support for our project. It is an honor and a privilege to have received this gift from the Carson Scholars Fund.”
“Reading is a gift to be cherished and shared with all generations. A world of possibilities can be discovered through this conduit of education which aligns with the values and fiber of our company. Domtar Owensboro Converting and the Domtar Hawesville Paper Mill are proud to sponsor, as well as partner with, our community in the Ben Carson Reading Room. We encourage the students of Foust Elementary to THINK BIG and embrace a life-long journey of learning,” shared Mike Arblaster, Plant Manager of Domtar’s Owensboro Converting Center.
Domtar and their vendors pride themselves on giving back to the communities they serve. Domtar first partnered with the Carson Scholars Fund in 2012 to open a reading room in Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania. The Ben Carson Reading Room at Foust Elementary is the seventh of ten new reading rooms to open through the Domtar partnership and the first Reading Room to open in Kentucky.
Currently, over 150 Ben Carson Reading Rooms have been established and are serving students in 21 states and Washington, D.C. To learn more about the Carson Scholars Fund visit carsonscholars.org.
