Brescia University has been awarded a $15,000 grant from PNC Bank that will be used to purchase technology for the School of Education. Candidates will use the technology in conjunction with their studies in order to learn new, innovative ways to prepare for their career in teaching and address twenty-first-century skills.

“As with many professions, 21st Century skills have become a key component in classrooms,” stated Dr. Ashley Holland, Associate Professor of Education and the Chair of the School of Education. “With access to various technology tools and applications, our candidates will be able to incorporate technology in rigorous and relevant educational situations while they are completing their initial certification degree. Our goal is to provide support for those 21st Century skills while candidates are here at Brescia University. In return, our graduates will continue to increase their impacts on education in our community.”

Brescia’s School of Education will purchase iPads and iPods with the funds that can be used in the higher educational setting to build lessons that candidates will implement in the field. Faculty members will provide hands-on learning for students in the program, as well as community partners’ students, to prepare candidates to teach the technology-literate learners that are currently in the P-12 setting. The overall goal is to increase the understanding and use of relevant mobile technology in the P-12 classroom setting.

“At Brescia, we have one over-arching goal, and that is to make a difference in the lives of our students by providing them with a student-centered, quality education. And that means evolving our educational programs to fit the current needs of the discipline,” stated Father Larry Hostetter, Brescia University President. “It is because of our community partners, like PNC Bank, that we are able to do this. We are grateful to them for their support and dedication to education and our community.”

“PNC’s commitment to the Owensboro Community remains strong as exhibited by this $15,000 grant to Brescia University in support of the School of Education,” stated Becky Shelton, Vice President and Branch Manager. “Requests that support early childhood school readiness initiatives is a top priority of the PNC Foundation. I am very proud to work for a Financial Institute that believes the development of our children for the future and is willing to support ways to assist with their educational readiness for the future.”

PNC Bank offers a wide range of services for all of their customers and is committed to providing quality service for over 160 years. They have a long history of being invested in their community, customers, employees, and shareholders. PNC Bank’s network includes 2,600 branch locations with three serving Owensboro.
