The Foundation for Daviess County Public Schools Board of Directors in partnership with Cathy and Tommy Mullins have awarded two scholarship to Apollo students in honor of the Mullins’ son, Brandon.
Olivia Wright and Brandon Crabtree, both 2017 graduates of Apollo High School each received $500 during scholarship award ceremonies at Apollo High School on Honors Night. Ms. Wright plans to attend Notre Dame University in the fall. Mr. Crabtree will enter National Guard training within the next few months and will begin his college career in the spring of 2018.
Specialist Brandon Scott Mullins, a 2008 Apollo graduate, enlisted in the US Army and was stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. While serving Operation Enduring Freedom, Brandon was killed on August 25, 2011, in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. For his heroic service, Specialist Mullins received several awards, medals, and decorations including the Bronze Star, the military’s third highest award, the Purple Heart, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Medal, The Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
Cathy and Tommy Mullins, Brandon’s parents, donated $1,000 to the Foundation to provide two $500 scholarships in memory of Brandon. These two scholarships are awarded to Apollo High School students who display qualities of perseverance and leadership while overcoming significant obstacles in life as he/she pursues successful educational and/or career goals.
