Students of Daviess County Schools have raised $12,906.07 to help fund blood cancer research and provide help and hope to thousands of patients and their families through The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Pennies for Patients program.
Students at East View Elementary raised $3,689.62 with the help of coordinator, LeVon Cozart.
Students of Highland Elementary School raised $2,827.14 with the help of coordinator, Marjie Pippin. (Both schools were recognized at the Student Series Celebration Dinner for becoming Lifesaver Schools by raising over $2,017.)
Other participating schools include:
- Burns Elementary School,
- College View Middle School,
- Daviess County High School,
- West Louisville Elementary School,
- and Sorgho Elementary School.
Together Daviess County Schools are making someday today.
“Thanks to research, approximately 90% of children with acute leukemia are now cured,” said Helen Overfield, Executive Director, of LLS’s Kentucky & Southern Indiana Chapter. “But there still is a long way to go. Leukemia is one of the most common types of cancer in children and adolescents, so LLS’s Student Series Programs provide a meaningful way for kids to help kids. Every penny really does make a difference.”
The LLS Student Series programs are designed to teach children how to set and reach goals, and the value of community involvement. Students spent three weeks during the 2016-17 school year on programs they designed to raise funds to help bring about a world without blood cancers. By contributing their spare change and participating in other special fundraising events, they made someday today.
