Students from Traditional Karate in Owensboro competed in the 25th Annual Windy City Karate Tournament. Seventeen youth and adult students from age 8+ traveled with Sensei Allen Renfrow to compete. The tournament featured events including: team and individual kata, team and individual kumite, one-step kumite, and khion. Sixteen students from Owensboro placed in the events bringing home an impressive thirty-six gold, silver, and bronze medals. “It’s a good chance to get them out of their comfort zone, and see how they perform under pressure,” Sensei Renfrow said.
The two-day event was held March 10 and 11, 2017, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, and featured competitors from across the Midwest. Renfrow’s assistant, Jamie Fulkerson, also competed, winning Gold in the Adult Individual Kumite and Kata events. Fulkerson said, “It’s an opportunity to apply the techniques that we work on perfecting throughout the year. We have a good group, and I’m very proud of the way everyone performed.” In addition to Renfrow’s dojo on Veach Road, Fulkerson also teaches a weekly class in Rockport, IN.
