It was a busy morning at Centre Court (2695 Bittel Road), with tennis matches going on in the inside courts and the outside courts.
“We enjoy the heck out of this place, and we hope others will come and use it like we do,” said Cissy Watson, who was cooling off after a friendly game on one of the outside courts with Kathy Anderson, Diane Miller and Charlotte Miller.
The four ladies said one of the greatest things about Centre Court is the welcoming attitude that the players have with each other. “These ladies right here are the reason I got back into tennis,” said Diane Miller. She hadn’t played tennis for about ten years until her friends invited her to join them at Centre Court.
“People might be nervous about getting back into tennis, but they shouldn’t be. They just need to come,” Watson added.
And that’s exactly what Owensboro Daviess County Tennis Association hopes will happen at Centre Court’s grand opening celebration, which will be this Sunday, August 16th from 1-4pm.
Staff tennis pro Bill Henness says there is a full day of activities planned for Sunday’s grand opening. “This is our chance to demo all of the programs we offer to the public. No matter where you’re at as a tennis player, we’ll have a program just for you,” he said.
Some of the highlights include:
- 1:00 – junior tennis program for kids 10 and under & junior/adult challenge (where some of the best juniors challenge adults)
- 1:45 – dedication of building and sponsor recognition
- 2:00 – 30-minute lesson for beginners & co-ed drill games
- 3:00 – cardio tennis fitness demonstration
- pickle ball
- prize give-a-ways with the ball machine (where if you hit a prize, you win it!)
Refreshments will also be served.
Centre Court features six indoor courts and nine outdoor courts. The massive tennis facility is nestled in the sports complex at Russell Shifley Park off Bittel Road—visible from the Bypass. Read more about Centre Court in this Owensboro Living Magazine feature article.
