The grand opening of Owensboro’s brand new Academy Sports and Outdoors is set for Friday, October 17th. “We’re really excited to be in Owensboro,” said Academy Communication Specialist Allan Rojas. Owensboro’s store is actually the first Academy to open in the state of Kentucky. Academy has 180 stores in 13 states, so the Owensboro and Evansville locations (which open the same day) bring the total to 15 states.
Prior to the grand opening, Academy Sports has planned a “Give Back Event” as a way to connect with the community by partnering with a local youth organization. For the Owensboro location, Academy Sports partnered with the Cliff Hagan Boys and Girls club to pre-select kids who will be the first ones to shop in the new building. Store associates will be “shopping buddies” for each child as they spend their donated gift cards.

The 58,000 sq. ft. store is located at 5801 Highland Pointe, just across from Cheddar’s. The opening of Academy Sports brings 125 new jobs in Owensboro, 250 regionally including Evansville.
